The Lakes Literary Landscape

The lakes have drawn writers and artists for 100’s of years. It’s even produced some of its own, like William Wordsworth born at Cockermouth and Melvyn Bragg born at Wigton. Many others, like Beatrix Potter, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Alfred Wainwright and Arthur Ransome, were greatly influenced by our often-brooding glacial landscape. These sometimes tourists fell in love with the Lake District, we fell in love with them and they became adopted Cumbrians.

These writers in turn have had some of the biggest influences on the literary world from fiction, nonfiction to poetry. The heady concoction of walking the same paths as these giants, reading their work and actually living where they wrote their work, is one of the biggest inspirations to me and many other writers who have lived or live here.
